    PADI OPEN WATER CERTIFICATION

The PADI Open Water Course follows the Confined Water Course and is required for PADI Open Water Certification. With the PADI Referral Form and your PADI Log Book, you can do your Open Water Course almost anywhere in the WORLD.

YOU ARE UNDER NO OBLIGATION TO DO YOUR PADI OPEN WATER COURSE WITH YOUR NFCY INSTRUCTORS.

Those who are interested in earning SCUBA CERTIFICATION in our part of Pennsylvania will need the local PADI "OPEN WATER COURSE" which is required for certification and FOLLOWS the "CONFINED WATER COURSE". The Open Water Course allows you to apply your knowledge and skills in a fresh water SCUBA resort. This training only takes TWO days - NORMALLY PERFORMED ON TWO SUNDAYS.

Before continuing, we EMPHASIZE that you are under NO obligation to do your Open Water Certification Dives with us. However, after you experience the pleasure and excitement of diving, you may decide to rejoin us for training in wet suit and dry suit diving and, perhaps, Advanced Diving open water classes or even higher..

A unique feature of the open water training that the NEW FRANKFORD COMMUNITY Y instructors provide is that your certified PADI Instructor uses an OceanReef Full Face Mask equipped with the OceanReef GSM two way underwater voice radio units. The instructor provides each of the students with an OceanReef GSM underwater receiving unit. All of the students are constantly being advised while underwater as the class progresses through the dive.

Your Instructor will provide further details on the open water program and any subsequent advanced classes that interest you up to and including PADI Assistant Instructor.

You will need to rent your open water equipment (approximately $60.00 FOR BOTH SUNDAYS) and purchase gloves (approximately $20.00). Rentals and purchases are made at the "Diving Bell Scuba Shop" located at 681 North Broad Street in Philadelphia, PA, USA.

The dive shop is in the PRUYN Building. PRUYN is pronounced PRINE, PRIJN, PREIN, PRAYN depending on which part of Europe you favor. The PRUYN building is exactly one mile north of City Hall in the second building south of the northbound Fairmount Subway stop of the Broad Street Subway. THE DIVING BELL is between the China Gourmet and The Urban Dog, north of Wallace Street almost up to Ridge Avenue.

As an educational note, the Pruyn family moved to Philadelphia from Albany, New York in 1908 and settled in Frankford. Philadelphia was known as The Workshop Of The World and Frankford was a large manufacturing community north of the Philadelphia City Limits. In the Old City area of Albany, New York you will find Pruyn Street where an adventurous young merchant from Amsterdam in The Netherlands set up shop in 1620.

Appointments are recommended. The first rental experience requires about an hour for proper fittings which are recorded for your future diving activities. Subsequent rentals can be arranged in advance by phone.

    Entrance fees to the lake,
    DUTCH SPRINGS,
are paid at the entrance - 2008: $28.00/day for Divers, $19.00/day for Non-Divers and Children age 5-9 $12.00/day, children under 5 are free. the 2008 Season Pass is $230.00. If purchased by February 29, 2008 the special Season Pass price is $160.00. For more information, visit www.dutchsprings.com

There are two scuba dives each day and full ¼" (7 mm) wet suits are required. This lake is a spring fed fresh water scuba playground two miles northeast of Bethlehem, PA.

The water temperature varies with the month. On Sunday, October 7th, 2007, it was 65 degrees on the underwater training platforms at thirty feet with about forty foot visibilty.

The PADI Open Water Instructor’s fee is $150.00 for diving skills evaluation required for certification and for exciting underwater tours. This payment also includes the cost of the certification process which produces your PADI Certification Card at the PADI Headquarters in California

AGAIN, YOU ARE UNDER NO OBLIGATION TO TAKE YOUR "OPEN WATER COURSE" WITH US. Anyone desiring to do their open water dives for certification in Florida, the Caribbean or almost anywhere in the world can do so with their PADI LOGBOOK AND PADI REFERRAL FORM signed by your Instructor.
